About the Artist
Mollie McGowan Harb
Welcome! I am a designer, metalsmith, wife, and mother of 4, living on the North Shore of Massachusetts. I have a background in architecture and worked at an architecture firm in Boston until my eldest son was born in 2007. I have always had a passion for designing and making things with my hands, Once home with the kids, it was quickly apparent that I needed to find an outlet for my creativity.
Several years ago I took my first jewelry class at a local studio and was immediately transfixed by the infinite possibilities for artistic expression that working with metal offered. There are so many different techniques to explore and opportunities to challenge myself. I also enjoy the immediacy of designing and fabricating something from start to finish in a relatively short period of time. This is a welcome contrast to architecture, where it could take years to see a design come to life!
Living on the coast, I am deeply inspired by the unique ecosystem of the Great Marsh, dunes and beaches that surround me. I am particularly drawn to the continuously changing contours, silhouettes, and patterns of the natural elements of these places. While the winds, tides and seasons may reshape the environment around me, it is anchored by hardy and persistent vegetation that allows it to regenerate and flourish. Two plants that provide this structure are Marram and Cord grasses.
Every piece I make is handcrafted with great care and attention to detail. In each piece, I strive to preserve moments and feelings that inspire an emotional connection to the natural environment. I hope that the jewelry I make provides a cherished reminder of this connection for years to come.
